The Power of Vision

My new found unemployed status has given me a lot of time to think and question what it is I really want in my life and what I want to do. Here are a few visions I have come up with for my future. There is one in particular that I can really envision and hope that is where I wind up.

Vision 1
After working for over ten years in in the business world, I now have a vision of making a career change and becoming a teacher! This is a scary change, but my excitement for it far outweighs my fears and I that is a great feeling.
The action I will take to complete this vision is to concentrate on school full time for Summer and Fall and complete my Bachelors in HR Management by the new year! Upon completion of this degree I will concentrate on obtaining my Masters in Education over the next couple of years while substitute teaching. I feel the substitute teaching will allow me to fully determine that it is the right career change for me.

Vision 2
Completing my Bachelors in HR Management by the new year and obtaining a full time position in the HR Department of a Fortune 500 Company.
The action I will take is to concentrate on school full time for Summer and Fall and complete my Bachelors by the New Year! Upon completion I will send my resume to all HR oriented recruiters as well as utilizing my network of friends and former colleagues for job referrals.

Vision 3
Concentrating on returning to work full time without limiting myself to only positions of great interest, but just getting "back in the game" and continue completing my Bachelors on a part time basis at night only.
The action I will take is to spend my days searching all employment websites for any opportunity that matches my skill set and only register for classes that would coordinate with a full time job.

  1. It seems that your main focus in life is all related to education. I am just wondering if you have other visions or goals in mind that is not related to education? (of course, this is optional)

I agree with you that changing career goal is a big thing. Considering you already know so much about one particular field, now you are going to try something new. In the views of many chinese (not speaking for all), we consider it waste of time, because how many 10 years do you actually have. However, it is always good to learn new things, and it will be a good thing if you really end up loving teaching.

  2. You are very determined to meet your goal by New Years, wish you the best! Wow, it seems like a sudden change wanting to go into teaching. Have you decided exactly what you would like to teach?

  3. I do have many other visions aside from education, but the layoff has really made me think about what I feel will really make me happy in terms of career and where I think I am supposed to be.
My "non-work" life is very full and happy and I want to feel that way about my career too. While true we never know how many ten years we will have, at this point I would rather spend them working towards a goal I think I will find fulfilling. If I start the teaching and find out it is not right I still have my years of experience in the business world and my degree to bring me back into it.

  4. It may seem like a sudden change but at the same time when I think about it it makes perfect sense for me. Was something I thought about "back when" and thought I wanted another path. Now that I have seen that path and have no regrets, I feel like I need to give this a try too.
Leaning toward elementary education grades 3-6, but concentrating on finishing what I started here many years ago first.

  5. You have interesting goals. I think working with kids is fun. I worked with them at the Y for a year. You seem like you have a long road ahead but you can do it! Good Luck!
